Beginning July 29, 2026, Maine law changes how camper trailer excise tax is calculated. Previously, camper trailer excise tax was based on the trailer’s manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) and age. Under the new law, excise tax will be based solely on the overall length of the camper trailer.
The new schedule starts at $6 for camper trailers under 13 feet and increases based on length, with larger trailers paying a higher excise tax. Camper trailers measuring 53 feet or longer will be assessed an additional $18 for each additional foot of length, rounded up to the next full foot.
If you are registering or renewing a camper trailer registration after July 29, please be prepared to provide proof of the trailer’s length.
